Looking toward Monument Valley on US Highway 163, Utah. I was first introduced to Monument Valley by the movie Forrest Gump – this was where Gump suddenly stopped his run. This scenic road certainly appeared in many other movies and TV shows. This area was a plateau largely made of sandstone tens of millions of years ago. Natural forces of wind and water slowly eroded the landscape and carved it into the mesas and buttes we see today. Monument Valley is located within the Navajo Nation reservation and is considered sacred. This segment of US Highway 163 is extremely popular among tourists - everyone (including us) wants to take photos right in the middle of the road to get the perfect alignment. It's fortunate vehicle traffic is low here. Geographically, Monument Valley itself is located completely inside Arizona, just south of the Utah and Arizona border.
