Stella Lake. There are a couple alpine lakes accessible by the trails just below Wheeler Peak that we wanted to check out. Teresa lake, the smaller of the two, was only about 0.2 miles from the trail leading back to our car. It was underwhelming though – looked more like a pond. Stella Lake was 2-3 times as large according to the map and more promising, but we had a hard time deciding. We'd like to get done with hiking before it got dark, Teresa Lake was 0.8 miles further out, we had no idea about the condition of the trail, and it was almost 4pm. Then we met a couple hikers who just came over from there and were told it barely took them half an hour, so we decided to go. When you had time on your mind, it felt forever, but we finally got there. It's totally worth it, seeing this beautiful view of the stark contrast of snow-covered peaks and dark green trees reflected in the lake. If you look closely, you can also see the trail of the falling snow over the dark reflection of the trees. And we got back to the car while there was still light.
