Bristlecone Pine Tree. The Great Basin Bristlecone pines are an extremely rare species found only in California, Nevada and Utah. They live in tough environment which in turn makes them very tough. In this grove below Wheeler Peak, the oldest trees are more than 4000 years old. This grove is reached by a 1.5 mile strenuous hike (at elevations of 10000 feet or higher) from the end of the scenic drive at Wheeler Peak Campground. It started snowing shortly after we started. It wasn't the typical snowflake you'd expect, rather, it was like large white dipping dots, softer than hail but definitely not fluffy, and it was coming down very intensely. It took us about 1.5 hours to get to this grove.
