| Wheeler Peak from Mather Overlook, Great Basin National Park. We almost didn't have the chance to enjoy the park as much as we did. When we started the trip on 9/30 there was a chance the government would shutdown come 10/1 which would close National Park Service, fortunately that didn't happen. In addition, there is a 12 mile scenic drive leading from the base of the mountain to just below the face of Wheeler Peak where one can take different trails to either hike up to the peak or see bristlecone pine trees. The climb to the peak would be too challenging for us, but we hoped to see the bristlecone pine trees – they are beautiful and unique and only grow above 9000 feet. However, the peak is tall and large enough to have its own weather and when it is bad, the scenic drive will be closed and it will be very difficult to get to these trees. That was exactly what happened the first couple days we were there. Fortunately, the weather up there got better on day 3 and the drive opened completely around noon. We had great fun hiking the trail and seeing the trees.
大盆地国家公园内的惠勒峰。这次差点儿没能好好体验这个公园。首先美国政府有可能在我们到达的第二天关门（国家公园体系属于政府），还好通过了一个45天的过度法案。然后就是这个惠勒峰，是主要看点和玩点。有一条19公里的观景路可以从山脚开到峰顶下面，然后可以步行爬到峰顶。爬峰顶对我们太挑战（距离远，路陡，海拔高），但是不用走那么远就可以看到狐尾松, 它们只在内华达这几个州高海拔的地方生长（大概2700米往上），能活上千年，而且挺好看，所以是打算看的。但是惠勒峰海拔接近4000米，峰顶有自己的天气，有时候山下碧空如洗峰顶上风雪大作，这种时候观景路就关闭了。我们在那儿的前两天就赶上这种情况。幸好第三天峰顶天气好转，中午的时候观景路开了，让我们如愿以偿 |
