Milky Way from under the span of Kachina Bridge, partially reflected over a puddle of standing water from recent rain. Millions of years ago, this area was part of the Colorado Plateau. Then the Colorado River and its tributaries started cutting into it and and created winding canyons. Overtime, water worked its way through canyon walls at some meanders and created natural bridges. Three such bridges are relatively accessible in the Monument today, and Kachina is one of them. The best way to appreciate these bridges is to hike down into the canyon and to the base of the bridges. The hike from the Kachina Bridge parking area to the bridge is 0.7 miles, with a 462 feet elevation loss, and it is strenuous. Dimensions of Kachina bridge: height – 210 ft, span – 204 ft, width – 44 ft, thickness – 93 ft.
