After 6.5 miles the unpaved road turns into switchbacks that drop into Hidden Canyon, the bottom of which is probably a few hundred feet lower than the surrounding land. The lodge is located on a ranch, and the lushness is a stark contrast to the arid landscape outside. They raise cows and grow apple, plum, and pear trees, and guests are welcome to pick and eat whatever fruit they like. A creek flows through the canyon. Wildlife including wild turkeys and mule deer roam the canyon. Fallen apples are a huge draw to the deer and turkey. The carpet in the room seems a bit rundown, but the room is spacious, with sink, a table top stove, refrig, and microwave, serves what we need well. There is no restaurant or meal service available at the retreat, but there is a stocked mini mart for you to fix a simple breakfast.
The mule deer are more or less used to people. Some does follow us as we move from tree to tree picking apples, and even walk right up to us. The bucks on the hand are more skittish, as soon as I get closer than 40-50 feet they'll start moving back.
