Big Tree
What was dubbed the "Great American Eclipse" drew millions to its path of totality on August 21, 2017. About 20,000 spectators (my wife and myself included) flocked to the viewing event at Clemson University alone. Packing so many people into one place could have easily made a giant mess, but thanks to the effort of everyone involved in putting it together, the event turned out to be a great success. Free parking and shuttle services were offered, solar viewing glasses were distributed, again, free of charge. Signs and volunteers were posted along the road. Many buildings opened their doors and facilities (the planetarium too!) to the public. On center stage, astronomers explained the mechanics of the eclipse, eclipse chasers shared their stories and described what to expect, and the Tiger Band gave a wonderful performance. All did their share to keep the spirit of the crowd going leading up to totality. Clemson definitely deserved a big shout-out!

A big tree near where my wife and I were sitting shaded us for a good couple hours in the late morning. This image combined two photos of the sun with the tree canopy in the foreground.
