Geminid Meteor Shower, December 14, 2021. 2021年12月14日, 双子座流星雨。(P) (V)
The weather was good on peak night this year. A minor inconvenience was I had to avoid the full moon which didn't set until 3 am. There were many more bright meteors that traveled long and far than what I saw last year which was off peak. In fact minutes after I pulled onto I66 one burst out right above my windshield and traveled in the same direction I was going for what felt like two full seconds before burning out. On the other hand, while I didn't feel I observed a lot more meteors than last year, that's what my cameras captured.
There was a stark contrast in the number of satellites and planes crashing the show between looking north (fewer) and south (a lot more). A meteor burns out so fast it will almost never get captured by more than one of these relatively long exposures and will show as a quick flash in the time-lapse videos. A satellite or plane remains visible significantly longer and its trajectory can be clearly seen, on the other hand.
