Went to the intersection of Piney Branch Road and Sligo Parkway to check out the nesting Yellow-crowned Night-heron Bill mentioned in the Monticello Park email group. Spent almost an hour looking for the nest which was less than 50 yards from where I parked. It was way too high for any meaningful picture. Then a nice local couple passing by struck up a conversation and told me they were on the way to see if some pileated woodpecker they saw the day before were still around. I tagged along but shortly after we started walking a pair of wood ducks in the creek caught my attention. They were much more approachable than any wood duck I ever came across in Huntley Meadows so I decided to skip the pileated and focus on them. The couple were so nice that on their way back they made sure to let me know the pileated was not around and I didn't miss anything.
