This trip was meant to be a quick stopover and indeed we only spent three hours in the refuge. It turned out to be very exciting nontheless. An adult bald eagle less than 40 feet from us took off from the bottom of the inland side of the wildlife drive before we can see it because it was blocked by bushes. As we were amazed by it and got the car rolling again, a juvenile took off from the same spot! I decided to camp out there to see what's going on. It soon became obvious that the channel on the inland side had very shallow water, but was abundant with fish. The blue heron caught a big one and worked hard to swallow it. A bald eagle came later and picked up another fish from the water, but I lost track of the eagle amidst the action. Then an osprey came fishing as well. I was able to get a few shots and it was very exciting. Never expected anything like this.
